On a road trip through the United States, John and his partner, Chris, stopped at Death Valley, California to view the vast salt flats of the Badwater Basin. John had secretly been planning to propose marriage at their next stop, the Grand Canyon. However, it was on a whim that Death Valley could be a an unusual and memorable place to propose. John Badwater Consulting was established in 2006 as John Hassett and Associates Ltd., to deliver consultancy and project management services to the National Health Service (NHS) in the rural county of Dorset, England. After returning to Australia, the business was established as a sole trader entity under the owner's name which changed to Badwater in 2019. In addition to his consulting activities, John has been engaged in both salaried and contract positions.
John Badwater qualified as an accountant in the UK and has since undertaken studies in the fields of psychology and sociology at Monash University. He holds a Certificate in Social Sciences from the UK Open University. Additional learnings include Prince2 project management, CRISP-DM data mining, Cyberquery and Crystal Reports. While working in Alice Springs he completed training for Closing The Gap, Cultural Awareness and Cultural Safety provided by the RACGP at the Centre for Remote Health.

Engagement is across all industries including the private sector, not-for-profit, independent government-funded enterprises and state/territory government departments. These include health and community services organisations. John provides a personalised and flexible service, that focuses on adapting to the culture of the client organisation. Change management requirements are designed to align with the client organisation’s strategic plan, values and code of conduct.
Experience gained in Australia is extensive, with former employers and clients located in capital cities through to very remote locations. Positions held range from those within managed teams, as well as autonomous roles within executive leadership teams and working with board members. John has been a key participant in implementing service improvements in the areas of cancer, public dental, hospital in the home, private hospice care and aged care. He gained experience working directly with the public through his volunteer work as a telephone counsellor.
As a person living with a non-visible disability, John is passionate about improving accessibility within the workplace. His focus is on engagement with employers to create strategies that deliver person-centred supports that enhance the workforce and enable the employer to fulfil their obligations under applicable laws. He has completed certification as an independent NDIS worker and delivers NDIS services through the consultancy or as a subcontractor of a registered NDIS organisation.
John is also available to deliver presentations where he shares his personal experiences of living with a non-visible disability, the impact on his life and how he has been both challenged and supported in the workplace.
