Job seekers with work experience tend to look at the open market to secure their next position. Many mid-level and senior roles are advertised by employment agencies that specialise in a particular sector such as finance or information technology. Job seekers with disabilities are often referred by Centrelink or the NDIS to agencies that specialise in disability, but have no particular industry focus. This can leave candidates with specific experience facing the open job market and reluctant to share aspects of their disability that will lead to access to workplace adjustments.
It should not be taken for granted that a job seeker with a disability is currently receiving a Centrelink payment or has an NDIS plan. They may already be employed and are looking to move to another employer. Others are returning to the workforce, after an acquired disability. There can be many reason for a person not having access to government funded disability services and those ineligible often feel isolated and unsupported.
